Each week a new diet craze emerges claiming to be the answer to all of our waistline woes. One week we are told to minimize fat, then that changes to eat fat (Atkin's diet), then don't eat carbs, then eat carbs....take vitamins while following this particular diet, or take essential fatty acids, antioxidants, enzymes or take this fat burning supplement to burn away all your unwanted fat. These supplements have become a multi-million dollar business lining shelves everywhere. The end result, we are still sicker and fatter than ever before...the only thing that is "lighter" is our wallet.
There is no magic bullet....the answer to our health problems is right in front of our eyes....the Key to Health and Fitness grows on tress and in the ground....the FOOD YOU EAT!
OBESITY: In the year 2000, (13 years ago) a poor diet, obesity and physical inactivity caused more than 320,000 US deaths--obesity is the leading cause of all 3 of our TOP KILLERS: heart disease, cancer and stroke. Each one of these TOP KILLERS are preventable!!
HEART DISEASE: The first recorded heart attack is said to have appeared in British medical literature just over 100 years ago (1878). Now more than one in 5 Americans suffer from some form of cardiovascular disease--and more than 2500 Americans DIE from it EACH DAY!! In 2001, just under 700,000 Americans died of heart disease.
CANCER: Just a generation ago, cancer was a grandparent's disease. Today we have entire cancer hospitals for children. 1.3 million new cancer cases were diagnosed and nearly 564,000 cancer deaths occurred in 2004, (9 years ago...the statistics have continued to rise)
DIABETES: More than 18 million Americans have diabetes--the 6th most frequent cause of death in America. The number of US adults diagnosed with diabetes has increased 61% since 1991 and is projected to double by 2050. That doesn't even include children.....we had to change the name of "adult onset diabetes" to "Type 2 diabetes" because our 9 year old children were being diagnosed with this disease......
Again, each one of these diseases can be PREVENTED! No one should suffer the ramifications of these issues.
We need to take positive action TOWARD our goal, not just negative action AWAY from the condition we don't want. When we use remedies to eliminate SYMPTOMS, we do NOTHING to address their ORIGINAL CAUSE--therefore, nothing to CREATE HEALTH. I truly believe we MUST EDUCATE ourselves about the causes of HEALTH (not disease) and include them in our daily routine.
By following a Whole Food Plant Based diet, that means eating loads of vegetables, fruits, beans, and whole-grains, you will be giving your body what it needs to give you optimal health. This doesn't happen overnight.....your current medical issues you may have didn't occur overnight....but I will tell you this, by making some small changes, you will FEEL a difference in a matter of one week. The BIGGER the changes you make, the BETTER you will feel.
