How did we get to a place where Americans are so confused about what is healthy that they no longer care? The bottom line is: our country's population is sick. Here are some statistics from 13 years ago...so these numbers are now much HIGHER: (stats from The China Study, by T. Colin Campbell)
- 82% of American adults have at least one risk factor for heart disease
- 81% of Americans take at least one medication during any given week
- 50% of Americans take at least one prescription drug
- 65% of American adults are overweight
- 31% of Americans are obese
- Approximately 1 in 3 children in America are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight
- About 105 million American adults have dangerously high cholesterol levels
- About 50 million Americans have high blood pressure
- Over 63 million American adults have pain in their lower back
- Over 33 million American adults have migraines or severe headaches
- 23 million Americans had heart disease in 2001
- At least 16 million Americans have diabetes
- Over 700,000 Americans died from heart disease in 2000
- Over 550,000 Americans died from cancer in 2000
- Over 280,000 Americans died from strokes, diabetes or Alzheimer's in 2000
We need to know the truth...people need to know why we are unnecessarily sick, why too many of us die early despite the billions spent on research. The irony is that the solution is simple and inexpensive. The answer to the American health crisis is the food that each of us chooses to put in our mouths each day. It's as simple as that.
Many people think they are well informed on nutrition, but they're not. As I said earlier, the "people with the money" are telling us what to eat....not because their products are healthy, but because when we buy what they have to "sell", we are making them very wealthy. We eat the foods that are causing all kinds of diseases, (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, cancers, strokes, etc.), keeping the pharmaceutical companies pumping out more and more drugs, while we become sicker and they become richer.
We are slowly committing suicide with our food choices. None of us have to have ANY of these diseases...NONE of us! A whole-food plant based diet has been scientifically proven to be the BEST "diet" for us to follow. Animal products--meat and dairy, as well as processed foods are the foods that are responsible for ill health. We keep eating the same foods over and over and wonder WHY we are a sicker and fatter nation than ever before in history. Doctors just write us a prescription (permission slip) for a pill to mask whatever symptom(s) we may have....high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar....and NEVER get to the root of the problem. God forbid the doctor tell us to stop eating meat, dairy and processed food....
I would like to believe that if a doctor and patient could sit down and discuss how powerful nutrition really is, that a patient would choose to change their food choices rather than take a handful of pills everyday....that a patient would rather change their food choices than go through having their chest split open for heart bypass surgery...that a patient would change their food choices rather than be diagnosed with some sort of cancer and go through chemo and radiation therapy to hopefully have another 5 years to live.
The problem is, doctors are not educated in nutrition. But, that doesn't mean we cannot educate ourselves!! We do not have to rely on "the people with the money" to tell us what to eat; that's what we are doing now and it obviously IS NOT WORKING!
ANYONE can change their food choices....it's like anything else in life, it's all about the CHOICES we make. This way of eating is easier than you think...it is not rocket science, believe me.
