Research has proven over and over again how detrimental dairy is for us. I know, I hate being the bearer of bad news...how can something we all love turn out to be so bad? Unfortunately, in today's world, we no longer have the family farms raising dairy cows....cows grazing in the pasture is a thing of the past....we now have a few HUGE dairy farms cranking out gallons and gallons of milk as quickly as they possibly can. If cows only give so much milk, how can production be faster?
Well, science has once again "interrupted" the way nature does things. The multi-billion dollar company, Monsanto, (maker of Agent Orange, Round up that is now found in genetically modified seeds, genetically altered corn seeds, genetically engineered potatoes, tomatoes, etc., as well as dishwasher detergent, safety glass, vinyl siding and fibers that go into Astroturf, and hundreds of other chemicals), came up with a way to "make" cows produce more milk. Monsanto came up with a hormone called rBST and or rBGH, two growth hormones with interchangeable names.
What scientists found was by injecting cows with this growth hormone every two weeks, it will boost their hormonal activity causing them to produce an additional 10 to 15% more milk, or about one extra gallon a day. Now, if some farmers choose not to use this growth hormone, (most do choose to use it), because milk from many dairies are mixed together, essentially ALL milk is treated with this growth hormone, unless you are buying organic. Now, you might think using the hormone is a good thing.....more milk, more nutritious food...lower milk prices. Well besides increasing milk production, let me tell you what it is doing to us as well as the cows.
First of all, this hormone is hazardous to the cows. It increases cysts and disorders of the cow's uterus, decreases the birth weight of their calves, and increases mastitis. What's mastitis? Mastitis is a painful udder infection that causes cows to pump out bacteria and pus along with their milk, requiring treatment with antibiotics and other medications that end up in the milk supply. Not to mention, that pus I just told you about...the FDA allows so many billions of pus cells to be allowed in the milk....they tell us it's SAFE. Think about that the next time you pour your child a glass of milk.
So, along with the pus cells we are drinking, we are also getting extra doses of many antibiotics, hormones, other bacteria from the cow's udder, and whatever other medication the cow receives to keep it "healthy". Unfortunately, cows live in horrible conditions exposing them to their manure, (some stand in manure up to their shins). Now, this growth hormone causes cows to have diarrhea as well as increased numbers of lacerations on the cows' shins....they're standing in manure up to their shins....more antibiotics pumped into the cows to fight off "that" infection. Research has shown some cows' infections go unnoticed by the farmers so all the bacteria and pus go pouring into the milk...I don't know, what's worse to drink, all the pus and bacteria by itself, or the pus, bacteria and all the antibiotics that were on-board to treat the cow.
Please remember, I'm not just talking about drinking a glass of milk and all these problems...anything made from milk, i.e., yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese, cream cheese, butter, sour cream, ice cream, etc., all come packaged with the same thing a carton of milk has in it.
If you think buying organic milk is better for you, it is and it isn't. Organic milk is not SUPPOSE to have any of these "bonus ingredients" in it, BUT, government has decided maybe they should "lighten" some of their restrictions on organic products and allow smaller amounts of these poisons in the foods. REALLY?? Believe me, the true organic farmers are not happy with this...it goes against everything they stand for. Also, remember, besides all the extra toxins we put in the cows, even if a person was consuming true organic dairy products, dairy itself causes all kinds of health issues. Of course we get saturated fat and cholesterol from dairy, but the protein in dairy, casein, feeds cancer cells. Not to mention, dairy is linked to all kinds of neurological problems such as fibromyalgia, MS, as well as stomach issues, eczema, asthma and other respiratory aliments, just to name a few.
The alternative to drinking a glass of cows' milk is to drink Almond milk. Now, if you are putting it on your cereal, you will not be able to tell the difference. As a matter-of-fact, I can't tell you the number of people that come back to me and tell me they PREFER the taste of Almond milk over cow's milk now. I'm not saying the first day you try a glass of Almond milk that you won't be able to tell the difference, because you will. It's NOT THE SAME. It's milk from a nut. However, over cereal, you really won't notice. I know soy milk is out there, but, in my opinion, the jury is still out on soy....there are many different health issues that are linked to soy, two big ones being breast cancer and prostate cancer.
Almond milk is available everywhere now...locally it's in Walmart, Hannaford, Price Chopper, Trader Joe's, etc. Yes, it may be a little more money than cows' milk, but I really don't want the cocktail of pus, bacteria and who knows how many antibiotics in my glass of milk.....Do You??
