That's very easy....the same place cows, horses, elephants, camels, oxen, giraffes, etc., get theirs...plants! These are some of the strongest animals on the planet eating green leaves, fruits, roots and shoots.
Plant foods that provide high concentrations of calcium include green leafy vegetables and certain nuts and seeds. Also available to us now are plant-based milks---I personally prefer Almond milk. As a matter of fact, Almond milk will give you more calcium per serving than cows milk. Remember, cow's milk comes packaged with saturated fat and cholesterol, as well as all the toxic chemicals I previously blogged about. And again, don't forget that when we are eating animal products, we overload our bodies with more protein than we need causing calcium to be leeched from our bones to help our bodies eliminate all that extra protein. Studies have shown repeatedly that Americans have the highest rates of osteoporosis--bone loss. This is because most of us have protein-overload due to animal products.
The experts state, "Bone health is not dependent on the calcium you take IN, but on the calcium you KEEP in." The more animal products we eat, the more acidic our bodies become. When we create an acidic environment, calcium is pulled from our bones to "neutralize" all this acid. So what this means is our bones sacrifice themselves for the greater good...our survival. The US and Scandinavia are two countries with the highest rat es of osteoporosis and hip fractures...and these two countries have extremely high dairy intakes. Why aren't we told about this??
To keep our bones strong, we also need to watch our salt intake, keep our caffeine at a modest level, and avoid drinking soda. Of course, EXERCISE!! The health of our bones depends upon stressing them through weight-bearing exercises...this will keep our bones strong and not weaken as we age. Bone-building exercises include walking, running and dancing...biking and swimming aren't quite as good, but will give you other benefits. Any kind of yoga or calisthenics that make you work against your own body weight will also strengthen your bones...so will weight training. Most experts tell us we should be weight-training a minimum of twice a week....this will prevent a hip fracture later in life.
So, if you have never tried a plant-based milk, I suggest you try Almond milk. Use it on cereal or oatmeal...you will be surprised how good it is. As I have said before, many people come back to me telling me they prefer it over cows milk!
